COURSE:

THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND ENGLISH LEXICOGRAPHY COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will introduce the students to the main concepts of English linguistics, the main stages in the development of the English language and English lexicography, with the objective of raising the students’ awareness of the development of the English language and preparing them for basic lexicographic work after some practice in dictionary compiling. The course will presumably cover some issues of general interests to majors of English lexicography, and the study of the compiling work of some of the important dictionaries in the history of English lexicography will help make them better students of English lexicography as well as teachers of English.

There are about eighteen working weeks in a semester. Generally, students are supposed to meet every other week for an afternoon of lecture and discussion, after their pre-class reading of the related chapters of the referred-to books.

ASSIGNMENTS
The assignments include a course paper in English, based on the guided reading and/or discussion of the key events in the development of the English language and the history of English lexicography, with sufficient level of sophistication and appropriate format. There may also be a close-book test on some of the most important concepts and/or an analysis of one or more important events in the history of the English language or lexicography. Students are also required to do some practical work in compiling a dictionary, thus putting to the test what they have learned during the reading and lecture /discussion. This course is also associated with a seminar in which students are supposed to report on the results of their assigned reading and research.

EVALUATION
The final evaluation of each participant to the course will be based on the course paper/ test (60%), the presentations and in-class discussions (25%), and class attendance (15%).
