Stimulus substitution is a term in Pavlov's conditioned reflex theory. It refers to, in conditioned action, a phenomenon that the conditioned stimulus which replaces the unconditioned stimulus causes the same reaction as the unconditioned stimulus does. Conditioned stimuli and unconditioned stimuli produce an overlapping excitement area in the cerebral cortex, so animals will sometimes mix up conditioned stimuli and unconditioned stimuli.
