Three experiments were designed to determine whether there are farther distances perceived when people are presented with stimuli with estranged social relationship. By presenting participants with face images belonging to different races, (i. e. different social categories), Experiment 1 supported the hypothesis. Experiment 2 demonstrated the result of Experiment1 was not induced by different physical features of different races by presenting the faces upside down. Experiment 3 further defended this effect when the social relationship was mediated by temporary social interactions between agents rendered by computer. The main findings are as following: (1) When objects belong to different social categories, people tend to perceive their distance farther than that they belong to the same social category condition. (2) The result of Experiment 1 could not be caused by physical factors. (3) When objects carry out out-group interactions, people tend to perceive their distance farther than that they interact in the same group. In sum, information of social relationship could influence the perception of exocentric distances; more estranged the relationship, farther the distance perceived, which supported the idea that the representations of physical and social distances are homomorphic.
