记忆过程就是信息在大脑留下痕迹的过程，若这些记忆痕迹得不到强化，会逐渐减弱、衰退乃至消失。记忆痕迹的被动消退导致遗忘。人在学习一种材料或接触某一事物后，在记忆系统中就会留下痕迹。遗忘既不是缺乏编码，也不是提取线索丧失，而是记忆痕迹被记忆提取环节忽视的结果。该理论源于桑代克的失用律。
英语语境:
The process of memory is the one during which traces are left in the brain. Provided that these memory traces are not consolidated, they will gradually recede, decline or even disappear. The passive recession of memory traces will lead to forgetting. After people learn something, traces will be left in their memory. Forgetting is not a lack of encoding or extracting clue, but the neglecting of memory traces by memory extracting step. The theory stems from Thorndike's law of disuse.
