与“自律”相对，他律最初是描述儿童道德判断发展所用的术语，指服从于自身以外的权威与规则的约束而行事的道德原则。康德认为不管这种约束是从社会来的(快乐的引诱，幸福的渴求)，或从宗教来的(宗教权威，宗教礼仪，宗教狂热与迷信)都属于他律。
英语语境:
Compared with self-discipline, the term others-discipline was first used to describe the development of children's moral judgment, which refers to the compliance with authorities beyond oneself and the constraint of moral principles on one's behavior. Kant held that no matter where this kind constraint came from, whether it came from the society (e.g. merry temptation and happy desire) or it came from the religion (e.g. religious authority, religious services, religious fanaticism and superstition), both of them belong to instances of others-discipline.
