文饰作用指自我防御机制或适应行为。一个人为了掩饰不符合社会价值的标准、明显不合理的行为或不能达到个人追求目标时，往往在自己身上或周围环境中找一些理由为自己辩护，把自己的行为说成是正当合理的，以隐瞒自己的真实动机和愿望。怨天尤人，强调外界需要，自我解嘲等都是文饰作用的表现。

Rationalization refers to an ego defense mechanism or an action of adaptation. When one tries to cover his values incongruous with the social values, unreasonable action or failure in achieving one's goal, he often seeks excuses from himself or the surroundings in defending himself and making his action appear to be righteous to cover his real intentions and desires. Blaming on others, highlighting the needs from the external world and self-mockery are all demonstration of rationalization.
