The process and law of mentally retarded children's language development are similar to those of normal children. Their language development, however, is extremely slow and lags far behind that of normal children, even when the intelligence age is matched. There is significant correlation between the the intellectual age of mentally retarded children and the average length of sentences. Moderate and severely mentally disabled children whose mental age ranges from 3 to 6 see an apparent improvement in their language competence, but their MLU is less developed than that of normal children.
