Among children who suffer central nerve damage, those with severe mental retardation tend to have problems in respect to motor coordination, gait, and elaborate motor skills. By the age of 1 or so, they are unable to pick up items with fingers. By elementary school, they don't know how to cut things with scissors, or they often stumble, and are not able to stand on one foot, hop on one foot or hop on one foot and then switch to the other foot, and so forth. They are so poor at motor coordination that they can not eat with spoon or chopsticks, thus affecting their ability to live by themselves.
