The concept of superego is linked with the self-critical function, a function of ego. Self-ideal originates from the first and most important identity hidden behind the individual, namely, the identity with one's father in an individual's pre-life history. Despite that superego is split out from ego, this does not mean that there is harmonious relationship between ego and superego. In many cases, ego is often involved in a strained relationship between self-ideal and superego. In addition, the distance between self-ideal and the real self varies from individual to individual.
