In order to study the effect of dense fog on expressway operations, an environmental meteorological monitoring station was set up to obtain meteorological elements and visibility test value closely related to the occurrence of dense fog. In addition, characteristics of circulation pattern along the expressway, laws and features of meteorological elements evolution and visibility value change at local monitoring stations were investigated and a dense fog monitoring and pre-warning system in the expressway was therefore established.
