According to normal mode theory, the analytical expression of target strength (TS) of an underwater object in neritic environment is derived based on the average-measurement method, and its physical significance is analyzed thoroughly. The analysis shows that TS is connected with both marine environment and testing distance, and when the testing distance is long enough it is approximately equal to the free-field target strength, TS free.
