single-peakedness

The theory of single-peakedness was put forward by Duncan Black. The paradox of voting will be solved if the individuals have single-peaked preferences over the alternatives in a one-dimensional condition which is an important hypothesis of the theorem. The analysis of single-peakedness is expanded from one-dimensional condition to n-dimensional space. The concept of single-peakedness in an n-dimensional space is studied. The paradox of voting can not be avoided in an over two-dimensional space even though the preferences of the individuals are single-peaked.

Traditionally studies on fertility desire have a hypothesis of single-peak preference, that is, people have only one optimal fertility preference, ignoring the existence of double-peak fertility preference that could lead to bias on estimation and projection of fertility preference. Experts theoretically demonstrate the occurrence of double-peak preference and the reasons for bias in fertility prefernece survey under the assumption of a single peak preference. A Probit model is uesed to analyze a survey results, testing the existence of double-peak fertility preference. Combining theory and statistical results, it gives a new analysis of the issues, such as "DINK" family, gender differences in fertility preference, and differences of fertility preference between only and non-only children. Finally a new explanation of the process of fertility decline has been proposed in the double-peak preference perspective.
