self-transformation
For many modern scholars studying the history of Chinese philosophy, Zhuang Zi's philosophy is labeled as relativism, which, however, neither does justice to the positive role Zhuang Zi plays in Chinese culture, nor accords with the text of Zhuang Zi. By an examination of the central concepts in Zhuang Zi's philosophy such as Tian (heaven) and Tian Lai (the music of heaven), the present author argues that the statement that Zhuang Zi is a relativist is misreading, which is due partly to the style of narration on the part of Zhuang Zi, but most importantly, is owing to the influence of Guo Xiang's interpretation on self-transformation.
individualization
Guo Xiang’s epistemology is always regarded as a sort of mysticism and know-nothingism because he takes an "ignorance-and-negligence” view. This understanding of Guo’s epistemology can’t hold water, for it results from viewing only one aspect of his theory. In fact, Guo’s view of epistemology embodies three aspects. "ignorance-and-negligence”is only one of them. If we see his view of "ignorance-and-negligence” from a holistic perspective, Guo’s view is by no means mysticism. Guo Xiang’s ontology of "individualization” is not a theory nor methodology of logical analysis, but an overt and phenomenal realm, which calls for thinking in images.
