“鸡三足”，一般的解释为，鸡本有两足，加上“鸡足”这一概念，即成“三”。与之相类似的命题是“黄马骊牛三”，“黄马”与“骊牛”为二物，加上合成的“黄马骊牛”的概念，即成“三”。这显然是将“名”与“实”混同言之，故为章太炎谓为“不伦”，而为顾实斥为“诡辞”。

英语语境:

The common explanation of the paradox of three-leg fowl is that the fowl's original two legs plus the concept of "the fowl's leg” constitutes altogether three concepts. There is a similar proposition which says "the yellow horse and the black cattle are three things”. It means that the yellow horse and the black cattle are two things. But conceptually they are three plus the concept of "the yellow horse and the black cattle”. Obviously, the propositions mix concepts with the true things, so Zhang Taiyan thinks they are ridiculous because we should pay attention to the true things only.
