It represents the unification of happiness and virtue, nature and freedom, theory and practice, the experiential world and the intelligible world. The doctrine shows the final end of Kant's critical philosophy. It has also exercized formative forces in the formation of his critical philosophy.

哲学王悖论就产生于柏拉图对哲学家的界定中。柏拉图的“洞穴喻”表明,上升到理智世界、掌握了最高的知识的哲学家不愿意回到城邦统治,就像走出洞穴的人不愿意回到洞穴一样。惟一适合统治的哲学家不愿意统治,不关心城邦和政治,这就是所谓的“哲学王悖论”。

It is in the definition of the philosopher where the paradox of philosopher-king grows. In the metaphor of the Cave, Plato manifested that those philosophers whose souls had ascend into the intelligible region, and who had grasped the highest form of knowledge, were unwilling to go back to the secular life, as those who got out of the cave were unwilling to get back into the cave. That means, those philosophers who are sufficiently qualified to govern the city aren’t willing to be rulers of the city. This is what is called the paradox of philosopher-king.
