In the environmental ethics, values of nature refer to its usefulness to human beings, namely the external or instrumental values of nature. On the other hand, they also refer to the self-containedness of nature or the ecosystem, namely the dynamic equilibrium effects produced by nature when its components link to and mutually affect each other. The effects are regarded as internal or intrinsic values of nature. Consequently, values of nature are the unification of external and internal values.
