博士源于战国。秦及汉初，博士的职务主要是掌管图书，通古今以备顾问。汉武帝设五经博士，教授弟子，从此博士成为专门传授儒家经学的学官。汉初，《易》、《书》、《诗》、《礼》、《春秋》每经置一博士，各以家法教授，故称五经博士。
