孝悌是儒家思想中两种重要的美德：孝，指对父母还报的爱；悌，指兄弟姊妹的友爱。孔子非常重视孝悌，认为孝悌是做人、做学问的根本。《论语》第一章中讲到，“一个人孝顺父母，敬爱兄长，这就是‘仁’的基础吧”。事实上，儒家思想也将孝悌视作维持封建社会等级制度的两个重要道德准则。

英语语境:

In Confucian ethics, being filial to one's parents and respecting and loving one's elder brothers often goes together as filial piety and fraternity. Master Kong attached much importance to filial piety and fraternity since he held that they were fundamental principles of being a man and learning, and he said in the 1st chapter of The Analects, "Filial piety and fraternity are the root of humanity.” In fact, Confucianists also regarded them as two important principles in strengthening the hierarchical system of the feudal society.
