汉语语境:
妈祖是天上圣母之称。这一称谓在乾隆末年已在福建出现，稍后台湾亦见此称。嘉庆九年，闽商将之传到锦州，道光时该称谓在福建已流布较广。关于敕封妈祖天之女神诸说乃民间叙事，经不起学理上的深究。
英语语境:
Goddess Matsu of the Sea is the title of Goddess of Heaven. The term has already appeared in Fujian Province during the late years of the Emperor Qianlong. Shortly thereafter, the title appeared in Taiwan.It has been desseminated to Jinzhou by the merchant of Fujian Province in 1804. It has got a wide circulation in Fujian Province in the period of Emperor Daoguang. Legend has it that Matsu was conferred the title of Goddess of Heaven by the imperial government of Qing. This is, however, merely a folklore.
