As the first published poet in America, Anne Bradstreet inaugurates the traditions of both American poetry and women's poetry. In her early poems, Bradstreet eulogizes the bygone Elizabethan era to comment on the political status quo back in Europe.She employs the trope of domesticity to versify her idea of the triumph of Pan-Protestantism around the world.Her late poems call on the power of domesticity to challenge the theocracy of the Puritanism .Domesticity functions both as a lens through which public life is reimagined and as a discourse where the panoramic supervision of public life over private life, divine world over secular world can be reexamined.

Accordingly, the puritan colonial authorities, through a series of laws, restrained personal freedom and carried out the principle of "the supremacy of collective interest. "This is totally different from and even entirely opposite to the current concept of American individualism. In spite of that, with the passage of time and the evolution of actual life in New England colonies, Puritanism could not avoid becoming more secularized and finally became one of the sources of current American individualism.
