明清时期社会存在着许多民间宗教。依照社会学的观点，这些宗教可以分为政治、经济、军事、文化生活等4种类型。各种类型虽然有明显的差别，但也存在交叉现象。由民间宗教而起的，最终转变为“邪教”的，不但被明清王朝的法律严加禁止，还曾经遭受过残酷镇压。

英语语境:

During the Ming and Qing period, there were many folk religions, which in many sociologists view can be divided into four categories including political, economical, martial and cultural religions. There was something common among them as well as many obvious differences. There was possibilities that these folk religions would escalate into heresies. If it were the case, they would be prosecuted severely by the laws under the Ming and Qing dynasties. Also, political suppression will be initiated when necessary by the Ming and Qing governments.
