Although Korean and Chinese belong to different language families, the onset consonants of loan Chinese morphemes in Korean show regular correspondence with those in Middle Chinese. Such regular correspondence exists in 8 types of onset consonants: velar, bilabial, palatal, glottal, semi-lingual and semi-dental, and etc. This correspondence provides empirical evidence to the phonological studies of Middle Chinese. It is also valuable for learners to predict the modern Korean pronunciation of a character according to its Chinese pronunciation.
