通常而言，次要发音是在主音之上所添加的近似元音的发音。在很多情况下，如果它们不具备音系学意义上的对比性，它们会被忽略。但在其他情况下，这些次要发音可能会对该语言具有一定的重要性。目前学界已认可的次要发音类型主要有四类，即唇音、腭音、软腭音和咽音。此外，次要发音也会和其他不常用的语音类型相结合。

英语语境:

The secondary articulation is normally the addition of an approximant or vowel-like articulation to the primary one. In many cases these may be ignored, i.e., if they are not phonologically contrastive, but in other cases, they may be important for the language in question. Four major types of secondary articulation are generally recognized: labialization,  palatalization,  velarization, and pharyngealization, as well as combinations and other minor types.
