Hong Kong written Chinese has been following an evolution path different from that of Standard Chinese since the two were virtually separated by the political turmoil of the sixties, and has become a regional variety of the latter. Apart from the obvious influence from English, three major factors can be identified as influencing the evolution of Hong Kong written Chinese: first, transfer of Cantonese features; second, residues from Classic Chinese; and third, innovations of its own.
