“所以”在上古汉语里是代词“所”加介词“以”结构，它开始用作结果连词不会晚于汉末魏晋，南北朝则是演变的过渡阶段，至迟到八世纪上半叶演变过程已经完成，“所以”在口语中完全变成了结果连词，跟现代汉语的用法没有两样了。
英语语境:
In ancient Chinese Suoyi was an union of pronoun Suo and preposition Yi. No later than late Han, Wei and Jin dynasties, it started to be used as a conjunction. Its transition was Northern and Southern dynasties. Before middle period of the 8th century the changing course had finished. After that Suoyi completely changed into a conjunction in spoken language just as it is used in contemporary Chinese.
