英汉话语标记语在话语交际中有着共同的语用标记作用，同时也存在着一定的差异。它们在话语构建中均起着明示导向与限定制约的作用，标示着前述话语与后述话语之间的关系，使听话人或读者便于解读话语。
英语语境:
Discourse markers in both English and Chinese perform a common function of pragmatic marking in communication whilst showing certain differences. That is, in both languages, they explicate as well as determine the coreferential mapping in the construction of discourse. They mark anaphoric and cataphoric relationships so that it is easier for listeners or readers to understand the discourse.
