Syntactic research on Korean was first initiated by Western missionaries, diplomats and scholars in the 19th century. Referring to western grammars and using analogy, exemplification and discrimination, they examined the syntactic phenomena of Korean, including word order, quotations, honorifics, complex sentences and punctuations. The studies not only revealed the basics of the Korean syntax, but also pioneered subsequent studies.
