On the basis of the Non-linear Metrical Theory, some scholars addressed the dynamic relation between primary stress and secondary stress in their assignment. They argued that secondary stress, as an auxiliary prominent component in a lower level, was dominated by primary stress. Also secondary stress was differentiated in nature from weak stress, which functioned as an assistant to integrate an utterance into a rhythmic pattern alternating between strong and weak syllables.
