Pun also has a long history in Britain. During old English period, pun existed mainly in vocal language games and epics. Pun became the writing method of poets like Geoffrey Chaucer in the middle English period. Pun has flourished in the Renaissance and has gained serious uses from the public and such men of letters as William Shakespeare. After the Restoration of King Charles II, the serious use of pun went out by the eighteenth century, when the Royal Society advocated straightforward style of writing.
