defence of poetry

“The debate between philosophy and poetry” is a real conflict which took place between two groups of Greeks during the sixth century and fifth century BC. At that time, both philosophers and poets claimed themselves as faithful friends of wisdom and truth. The ancient Greek philosopher Plato, in his masterpiece The Republic, allowed Socrates to scourge poets, dating back to the period of Homer, as well as their works, claiming that imitative poems, intercepted by two layers from the substance, are shadows of shadows. Such poetry imparts no knowledge and can only corrupt human ethics. From then on, this controversy became a constant and everlasting theme. Plato's condemnation to poetry and poets, Aristotle's plead for poetry, Sidney and Shelley's defence of poetry and so on are all involved in this quarrel. The English poet and theorist Philip Sidney, in his masterpiece essay The Defence of Poetry, defends the nature and social function of poetry, and advocates that poetry is the free feigning under the framework of nature, and that poetry not only reflects truth as history and philosophy does, but prevails over the two regarding teachings as well. He has justified the role of poetry.
