田同之晚年致力于词学之道，既有理论著述《西圃词说》，又有创作成果《晚香词》集。遵照词要“别有寄托，另具性情“的词学主张，《晚香词》集中的作品，虽少重大社会生活的题材，却是词人躬耕西圃、苦心孤诣之作，清新婉丽，寄托遥深，艺术水平很高。叶恭绰的《全清词钞》选录了他的三首小令。

英语语境:

Tian Tongzhi was devoted to studying Ci in his old age. He wrote Xipu Cishuo, a work of literary theory, and Wanxiang Ci, a collection of his creation. Following the idea of Ci which has deep sustenance and feeling, the poems in Wanxiang Ci, in which we can find deep sustenance, were all earnestly written. His works are all fresh and of high artistic level. His three short poems are listed in Ye Gongchuo's Quan Qing Cichao.

英语语境:

The principal performers of the Song ci-poetry were occupational and professional singsong girls. There were a variety of expressive patterns in Song ci-poetry, of which "small ditty” or "slow melody” were widespread. With the result of female singers’ singing the words of Song ci-poetry, it was well developed in the Song dynasty, and its thematic orientation and stylistic foundation were as well generally set.

欧阳修的艳词多写下层官吏与妓女之情,柳永的艳词多写落魄文人的狎妓;柳用长调笔法,铺叙延展,欧用小令笔法,遗貌取神;柳以平面叙述,突出人物心态,欧以立体描写,突出人物声情;欧追求雅正,柳不免卑俗。

英语语境:

Ouyang Xiu always wrote love poems about the affection of lower officials for prostitutes, whereas Liu Yong wrote about the dissipated scholars. Liu Yong liked to write Chang Diao but Ouyang Xiu Xiao Ling; Liu Yong’s love poems projected these people’s mood but Ouyang Xiu’s the people's feelings. Ouyang Xiu pursued elegance but Liu Yong’s love poems are vulgar.
