Coetzee broke the traditional binary opposition, like female / male, animal / human, one after another in his novels. And “the Other”, as a representative of the former one in dichotomies, invites the reader to experience the typical image of the Other that can never be assimilated. A series of narrative strategies have been adopted, including the performance of narrative displacement and alienation effect, the reinterpretation of traditional notions of allegory, in order to set up “the Other” and highlight its feature.
