Banzi music notation has developed from the early gongchi music notation in popular form and completes itself as an independent music notation in late Tang dynasty. In Song dynasty, banzi and gongchi music notation were both applied as the common notation of the court banquet music, the former mainly in theory, the latter in practice. The two remained dual distinct forms of the same music notation from late Tang dynasty to Song dynasty.
