lishu in Han dynasty

There were some great changes that took place in people's aesthetic attitudes towards li-shu. In the beginning of the Song Dynasty, people were indifferent to li-shu, and in the middle and later period of the Northern Song Dynasty, it became a trend to follow the example of the li-shu of the Han and Wei Dynasties. And later, in the Song Dynasty, learning from the Han Dynasty's lishu became a fashion and the literati defined its elegance. Under the influence of the notion that deems the Han li-shu as the fashion, the Song people had built a favorable atmosphere for the development of li-shu, and made some preliminary achievements in practice.

Han li-shu

In the thousand years between the end of the Han Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, there were more than a few of calligraphers practicing li-shu (clerical script), but none of them have made influential achievements at their times, let alone reliving the splendor of the Eastern Han Dynasty. It was not until the Qing Dynasty was there a refreshed knowledge of Han li-shu. People started to realize the importance of combining theories and practice once again. For one thing, they pursued practicability while getting rid of the negative influence of "TieXue"; for another, they followed the example of the Han Dynasty Stele and renovated it, and achieved great success in the inheritance and creation of li-shu, which stood as another peak after the Han li-shu.
