禅这一概念最早起源于印度，意为“冥想”。魏晋以后，佛教对中国文人士大夫的影响已经很深。至唐，王维开创的文人画，进一步以佛理禅趣入画，把画意与禅心结合起来，成为一种禅意画。这种禅意画到了明代则称为“画禅”。
英语语境:
The concept of dhyana was originated in India, meaning "meditation". In the Wei and Jin period, the influence of Buddhism on Chinese literati was deepened. Till the Tang dynasty, Wang Wei pioneered the literati painting, further added the Zen Buddhist art to paintings, and combined the painting and Zen into the Zen painting. In the Ming dynasty, this kind of painting was called "dhyana painting".
