pen clip on hat
In ancient time, official historians, imperial censors or attendants would put a ink brush into his hats so to write and take notes at any time. Later, white ink brushes are used as one of the ornaments on officials'hats. The fourth part of Records of Carts and Clothing in the History of the Song Dynasty gives the following accounts: The pen clip on hat is passed down from the practice of ancient officials inserting an ink brush into their hats. To make a pen clip, cut bamboo into a stalk, which is then wrapped by silk. Use yellow silk as the hair, and then expand it with gold-thread leaves. When the ink brush is made, insert it in the back of the hat. According to previous rules, civilian officials of and above the seventh class should insert white ink brush in their hats, but military officials are not required to do so; now both civilian and military officials put ink brushes in thier hats.
