Scholars both at home and abroad have been researching into the origin of Matouqin. Among all the opinions, two theories are the most well accepted. One is the theoy of Hobus as the ancestor, and the other is the theory of Yekle as the ancestor. Some scholar thinks that Hobus in the Tang dynasty is the remote ancestor and the horse tail huqin in the Song dynasty should be the orginal ancestor of Matongin.
