Wood surnai is one of the gas instruments of the Yi nationality. It prevails in Liangshan in Sichuan, Weining, Bijie, Shuicheng in Guizhou and other places. It is 72.5 cm in length and is made entirely of wood. When playing this instrument, one holds it with both hands, presses the four lower holes with the left index finger, middle finger, ring finger, little finger, and presses the three upper holes with the right index finger, middle finger, ring finger. Next, one puts the thumb on the back hole and the reed whistle into mouth. All these done, one begins to play it with circular breathing.
