The costume is a symbol of status and social position. During the Qing dynasty, there was a strict hierarchical system of clothes and hat from emperors to officials, and from empress to women granted with imperial ranks. The clothes are classified by function into court dress, ceremonial dress, mufti dress and traveling dress with corresponding ornaments. Long gown, mandarin jacket and waistcoat were the typical Manchurian clothes. The officials wear winter hat for cold winter day and summer hat for scotching days, while the common people had skullcap and felt cap.
