琴曲演奏一般都具有地方风格，如初唐的“吴声清婉”，“蜀声躁急”。此后，名师的创造开始对风格形成影响，于是有盛唐的“沈家声”、“祝家声”、“董家声”。宋代琴谱的广泛使用，对稳定风格起到作用，于是有阁谱、江西谱和浙谱的递变。在地区、名师、传谱的基础上形成琴派，如宋代的浙派，明代的虞山派，清代的广陵派等等。
