Allegro of three and a half line, also known as "17-character Verse, matured in the Northern Song Dynasty and prevailed among the general public in the entire Song Dynasty. There are many notable experts in this literary genre, such as Zhang Shou. Due to its powerful satirical function, this poetical style is used as a tool for political struggles. Some studies hold that its basis lies in traditional Chinese poems that have four lines consisting of five characters.In the meantime, it incorporates features of Chinese two-part allegorical sayings, but condenses their message-revealing second parts into one or two characters, which, as a result, adds to its strength and appeal.
