三要指书法的三个基本要求。明项穆《书法雅言》云“书有三要，第一要清整，清则点画不混杂，整则形体不偏邪；第二要温润，温则性情不骄怒，润则折挫不枯涩；第三要闲雅，闲则运用不矜持，雅则起伏不恣肆。以斯数语，慎思笃行，未必能超入上乘，定可为卓焉名家矣。”

英语语境:

As stated in “Orthodox Calligraphy Criticism” by Xiang Mu in the Ming dynasty, The Three-Need signifies three basic requirements which have to be fulfilled in calligraphy. The first is neatness and straightness. Neatness precludes chaos and noises caused between strokes; straightness allows characters square and level. The second is gentleness and easiness. Gentleness avoids the nature to be arbitrary and overbearing; easiness enables the transition between strokes mild and soft. The third is openness and steadiness. Openness rules out restraint and reservedness; steadiness excludes uncontrolled moves. Careful thinking about the above words not necessarily contributes to be the most classical artist but the brilliant expert.
