明清之际，江南经济得到长足的发展，长江沿岸的芜湖地处江南水路交通要道，往来商旅频繁，经济富庶。不少画家寓居此地，以卖画为生，出现以萧云从、汪之瑞等一批有成就的画家，且追随从学者众多。因而形成以地方区域为名的 “姑熟派”，这一派代表性画家是萧云从。

Then there appeared plenty of accomplished artists, such as Xiao Yuncong and Wang Zhirui, etc, in addition to their numerous followers, so a painting school “Gushu” named after the local place drew fame and attention. And the representative of this school is Xiao Yuncong.
