By the West Han Dynasty, the acrobats from Western Regions had performed their skills in rope-walking in the Imperial palace, which became increasingly advanced after the Sui and Tang Dynasty till the period of Liao and Jin. The administration of rope-walking was transferred to the Wubei Department in the Qing Dynasty from the Taichang Monastery, and the previous silk ropes was also changed to brass ropes or flax ropes.
