In the Southern and Northern Wei-Jin dynasties, the manufacturing technique of puppets was more complicated and the puppet show more lively. According to the story in the classical work The History of the Three Kingdoms by Chen Shou, a reputed historian of the Western Jin dynasty, the emperor of Wei Kingdom asked his minister Ma Jun to transform and improve the puppet show. Ma reckoned on a new trick of hydro-driven puppets to create the so-called hundreds of hydraulic operas, which was the initial form of the water puppet show.
