In fact, it is not easy for artists to become a famous character, a diva or a leading member (of a theatrical troupe). Even in the 1930s, when local opera was in heyday, not many artists could stay and perform in Hankou's major public places of entertainment for a long period of time. Most of them had to go back and forth to busk between Hankou and neighboring villages, small counties as well as remote and poor villages, barely maintaining the bread and butter. While some of the artists might find no theatrical troupe to accept them. As a result, they had to borrow money to scrape by.
