五四以前，在中国的文学史上从没有一位女剧作家。这是由于旧观念、旧伦理的将女性牢牢束缚于闺阁之内。致使她们的艺术天才由于缺乏广阔的生活内容而只能萎缩为无奈的低吟浅唱。正如田禽说：“旧礼教的麻醉性限制了她们写作的范畴，由于她们长期被禁在闺中，不能涉足社会的活动，当然无从表现社会生活，因而她们的写作生活：只不过当作闲情逸致的消遣而已。”

英语语境:

Before the May Fourth Movement in 1919, there was no female playwright in the history of Chinese literature. This is because women were firmly imprisoned in their boudoirs by outdated ideas and ethics. As a result, their artistic talents were shrunk as helpless crooning owing to the lack of vast content of life. Tian Qin said: "The anesthesia of old ethics limits the scope of their writing. Besides, because women have been banned in their boudoirs for a long time and cannot involve in social activities, they cannot represent the social life, and for them, writing is just a recreation in a leisurely and carefree mood."
