线装是我国典籍的具有民族特色的一种书籍装订方法。起源于唐代，盛行于明代中叶，是在经过改进的包背装基础上发展起来的。包背装在书背处容易破损，此时仅靠二三个纸捻，不能把书脑部分压平伏，书脑的上下两角纸张容易卷起，影响外观和阅读。于是又有人作了改进：在打孔订好纸捻后，另外打孔用线穿订，这就是“线装”。
英语语境:
Beginning in the Tang dynasty and popular in the middle Ming dynasty, oversewing evolved from the papercover binding in which pages in spine break easily and fore and tail edge cannot lie flat sometimes. So small vertical holes are punched through the far left-hand edge of each signature, and then the signatures are sewn together with lock-stitches to form the text block to bind books firmly.
