Freehand brush painting had bud in Tang Dynasty, whose free idea could date back to Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties. The establishment of the aesthetic standard of YiGe given by Huang XiuFu at the beginning of Song Dynasty was the prelude to freehand brush painting which came into being with the efforts by Su Shi and Mi Fu and flourished from Yuan to the middle of Ming Dynasty. From the end of Ming to that of Qing, it was brought to a conclusion eclipsing. Freehand brush painting is extremely good at displaying the internal mind with poetry and calligraphy as its support, expressing objective reality without being restricted by external shape and color. Free spirits permeate the development of freehand brush painting and are decided by its philosophical basis.
