Tian Han got to know the Neo-romantic dramas since he watched Hauptmann's “Die versunkene Glocke” in the Kabuki Theatre, Tokyo, Japan in september 1918. He was deeply impressed and inspired by this symbolistic drama. Except for reading the scripts of the Neo-romantic dramas, he was also dedicated to the study of their history, creative appearance and aesthetic characteristics. He once listed a series of representatives and their works of Neo-romantic dramas in the letters to Guo Moruo at March, 1920.
